Imagine that it’s 40 degrees outdoors with the sun boring down on your head. You’ve just arrived home from a long day at work and turned on the central air conditioning, so that you can relax while you have your meal. But what if the compressor doesn’t startup? As the compressor is an integral part of the central air conditioning system, it is helpful to understand the possible reasons, and how they can be fixed.

1) Grimy Coils and Filters

When a central air conditioner is not cleaned every few weeks, it leads to building up of debris, dirt, and grime in the filters and the coil, which results in decreased cooling, and the air conditioner eventually shuts down. To ensure that the air conditioner problem does not persist, it is recommended that the filters and coils are cleaned out or replaced before they heat up and cause the compressor to stop working. If you wash the coils and clear out all obstructions, the compressor of the central air conditioning will start working again.

2) Starter Relay and Capacitor

If you ask a central air conditioner service expert, they’ll tell you that one of the most common reasons why a compressor stops working is because the starter relay and capacitor stop providing power to the compressor. If you have basic knowledge of this central air conditioning problem, you may consider replacing the parts on your own. If these parts are not immediately replaced or changed, then it could increase the costs for your air conditioning, and you’ll have to replace the old compressor with a new one; instead of a capacitor change.

3) Insufficient Oil

Just as our bodies require food and water to keep functioning and to stay healthy and alive, a central air conditioning system needs oil to provide adequate cooling. If there is insufficient oil or no oil, then your compressor will heat up quickly and not perform well. At times, if the overheating increases and there is the maximum pressure, then it could lead to an automatic shutdown. To avoid this problem in the future, it is advised that you schedule central air conditioner service to perform oil checks every two months or so.

4) Power Failure

At times when the compressor of your air conditioning is not working but the fan is running, it simply means that your compressor is not receiving power. If you’re facing this problem, then there is no need to panic as all you have to do is check the wiring, turn off the air conditioner and start it again, and check if the fuse has blown or the circuit breaker has tripped.
